Use the heirloom as a storytelling element in your photographs. Share the history and significance of the object with your photographer so they can incorporate it in a way that brings its narrative to life in the images.

Tips for Incorporating Heirlooms

1. Coordinate with Your Photographer: Discuss your vision and the specific heirlooms you'd like to include with your photographer before the session. This ensures they can plan the shots accordingly.

2. Choose the Right Setting: Consider the location and setting that best aligns with the heirloom's history and significance. For example, a vintage pocket watch might be suited for a rustic outdoor setting.

3. Focus on Details: Heirlooms often have intricate details that tell a story of their own. Close-up shots can capture these details beautifully, adding to the sentimental value.

4. Keep It Natural: Let the incorporation of heirlooms happen naturally. The goal is to enhance the authenticity of the photograph, not overshadow it.

Preserving Your Family's Legacy

Incorporating family heirlooms into your photography is a powerful way to preserve your family's legacy and connect the past with the present. It's about creating images that tell a story that transcends time and continues to be cherished by future generations.

If you have family heirlooms you'd like to incorporate into your photography or if you're interested in exploring this idea further, don't hesitate to reach out to me. I'm here to help you infuse history into your photographs and create a visual narrative that celebrates your family's unique story.

Light, Composition, Magic: Behind the Scenes of Captivating Portraits https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2023/10/light-composition-magic-behind-the-scenes-of-captivating-portraits Light, Composition, Magic: Behind the Scenes of Captivating Portraits

Introduction

Creating a captivating portrait is more than just pointing a camera and clicking a button. It's an art that involves understanding the subtleties of light, the power of composition, and the magic of capturing a person's essence. As a professional photographer, I'm excited to take you behind the scenes to unveil the secrets that go into crafting portraits that leave you in awe. In this blog post, we'll explore the elements of light and composition, and how they combine to create the magic of captivating portraits.

The Play of Light

The Role of Light in Portraits

Light is the cornerstone of photography. It shapes, defines, and brings your subject to life. When we talk about capturing the magic of portraits, we're often talking about harnessing the right kind of light. Here are some aspects of light to consider:

- Quality of Light: The soft, diffused light of a cloudy day can bring a gentle, flattering quality to a portrait. On the other hand, harsh sunlight can create strong contrasts and bold shadows.

- Direction of Light: The direction from which the light comes affects the way the subject's features are illuminated. Side lighting can highlight textures, while front lighting creates an even, balanced look.

- Color of Light: The warmth or coolness of light can set the mood of a portrait. Natural light at sunrise or sunset has a golden hue that imparts a warm, romantic feel, while midday light tends to be cooler and more neutral.A person getting her eyebrows done

The Art of Composition

Composition as a Storytelling Tool

Composition is the arrangement of elements within the frame to create a visually appealing and narratively powerful image. It's how we lead the viewer's eye and convey a message. Key composition techniques include:

Rule of Thirds:

Placing the subject or significant elements along the lines or intersections of an invisible grid can create balance and add interest to the image.

Leading Lines:

Utilizing natural or created lines within the frame to guide the viewer's gaze toward the subject.

Framing:

Using elements in the environment to frame the subject, drawing attention to the main focal point.

Creating Magic in Portraits

Connection with the Subject:

The magic in portraits often stems from the connection between the photographer and the subject. It's about making the subject feel comfortable, relaxed, and confident in front of the camera.

Candid Moments:

While we often plan and compose our shots meticulously, some of the most magical moments occur spontaneously. Candid expreA person with long blonde hair blowing bubbles

Post-Processing:

The magic doesn't end with the click of the shutter. Post-processing, when done subtly and skillfully, can enhance the image, bringing out details, colors, and textures that make it even more captivating.

Conclusion

Captivating portraits are the result of a careful dance between light, composition, and the magic of the moment. They draw you in, evoke emotions, and tell stories in a single frame. As a professional photographer, my aim, is to create portraits that not only look beautiful but also capture the essence of the subject and the magic of the moment.

The Essence of Natural Elegance

Unveiling Inner Beauty

Natural elegance is about unveiling the inner beauty and grace of the subject. It's a way to capture the subtleties of personality, the allure of character, and the charm of authenticity. Crafted poses allow us to highlight these elements while enhancing the overall visual appeal of the photograph.

Creating Timeless Art

Elegance never goes out of style, and when we craft poses that exude elegance, we are creating timeless art. These photographs have the power to transcend trends and evoke emotions and admiration for generations to come.

The Art of Crafted Poses

Understanding the Subject

Crafted poses begin with understanding the subject—your personality, style, and comfort level. Knowing what makes you feel confident and natural is the first step in achieving a pose that reflects your true elegance.

Body Language Matters

Posing is all about body language. The way you stand, sit, or interact with your surroundings can convey a powerful message. Subtle shifts in posture and expression can make a significant difference in the overall look and feel of a photograph.

Tips for Achieving Natural Elegance

1. Relax and Breathe: A relaxed subject is more likely to exude elegance. Take a moment to breathe, feel comfortable, and let go of any tension before and during the shoot.

2. Engage with the Environment: Interact with your surroundings and engage with the moment. This connection can lead to more natural and elegant poses.

3. Embrace Movement: Elegance doesn't always mean stillness. Incorporate gentle movements, like a flowing gown or a graceful twirl, to add dynamism and charm to your poses.

4. Coordinate Your Wardrobe: Select outfits that complement the mood and setting. Elegant attire can enhance the overall feel of the photograph.

Creating Natural Elegance for Different Photography Types

Crafted poses in portrait photography can highlight your unique features and personality. It's about striking a balance between showcasing your natural beauty and your inner elegance.

Title: Candid Moments: Capturing Authenticity https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2023/10/title-candid-moments-capturing-authenticity Introduction

In a world of carefully curated social media images and posed selfies, there's something truly special about candid photography. Candid moments capture the essence of life as it happens, freezing genuine emotions and unfiltered expressions in time. As a professional photographer, I am passionate about the art of capturing authenticity through candid photography. In this blog post, we'll explore the beauty and significance of candid moments and why they hold a special place in the world of photography.

The Magic of Candid Photography

Authentic Emotions

Candid photography is all about authenticity. It captures real emotions, unguarded moments, and raw expressions. These are the moments when you're not conscious of the camera, allowing your true self to shine through. Whether it's a spontaneous burst of laughter, a quiet reflection, or an affectionate glance, candid moments reveal the genuine beauty of your personality.

Timeless Memories

Candid photographs serve as timeless memories. They transport you back to that exact moment and evoke the same emotions you felt then. Candid shots of a child's laughter, a couple's stolen kiss, or a family's shared joy become cherished memories that can be revisited for years to come.

The Art of Candid Photography

Observation and Patience

As a candid photographer, my role is to observe and be patient. I watch for those fleeting moments of authenticity and readiness to click the shutter when they happen. Patience is key because candid shots can't be forced; they must occur naturally.

Creating a Comfortable Environment

Creating an atmosphere where you feel relaxed and at ease is essential for candid photography. When you're comfortable, your true self emerges, and that authenticity shines through in the photographs. I strive to make every photoshoot a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

How to Embrace Candid Moments

1. Let Go of Perfection: Understand that candid moments are not about perfection. Embrace imperfections and the beauty of real life.

2. Be Present: Live in the moment during your photoshoot. Engage with your surroundings and the people around you. Authentic moments often arise when you're fully present.

3. Trust Your Photographer: Trust in your photographer's ability to capture candid moments. Let them do their job while you enjoy the experience.

4. Capture Everyday Life: Candid moments can happen anywhere, from family dinners to walks in the park. Don't limit candid photography to special occasions; celebrate the beauty of everyday life.

Conclusion

Candid moments are a celebration of authenticity and a testament to the beauty of the human experience. They capture the raw emotions, unfiltered expressions, and genuine connections that define us. Through the art of candid photography, we freeze these moments in time, allowing you to relive them whenever you revisit your photographs.

If you're ready to embrace the magic of candid moments and create a collection of authentic and heartfelt photographs, I'm here to help. Contact me today, and let's embark on a photography journey that captures the beauty of your true self and the moments that matter most.

Wardrobe Harmony: Coordination, Not Matching https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2023/10/wardrobe-harmony-coordination-not-matching Introduction

When it comes to creating stunning photographs, the way you and your loved ones dress can significantly impact the final result. As a professional photographer, I understand the importance of wardrobe choices in achieving visual harmony without compromising individuality. In this blog post, we'll explore the art of wardrobe coordination, emphasizing that it's all about creating a harmonious visual narrative, not about everyone wearing the same outfit.

The Power of Coordination

Individual Expression

One of the key principles of wardrobe coordination is to allow each person's individuality to shine through. Rather than dressing everyone in identical outfits, the goal is to choose clothing that complements each person's style and personality. This approach results in photographs that reflect the unique character of each individual while still maintaining a cohesive look.

Visual Harmony

Wardrobe coordination ensures that the overall visual composition of the photograph is harmonious. By selecting colors, patterns, and textures that work well together, we create a pleasing and balanced aesthetic. This not only enhances the photograph's appeal but also draws attention to the subjects and their interactions.

Tips for Wardrobe Harmony

1. Choose a Color Palette: Start by selecting a color palette that suits the mood and location of the photoshoot. Consider colors that complement each other and the environment. Earth tones for outdoor shoots, pastels for a soft look, or bold colors for a vibrant feel are all great options.

2. Mix Patterns and Textures: Mixing patterns and textures can add depth and interest to your photographs. Opt for a combination of solid colors, subtle patterns, and different textures within the same color family to create dimension.

3. Individual Accessories: Encourage individuals to express their personality through accessories such as scarves, hats, or jewelry. These small touches can add a unique flair to each person's outfit while maintaining overall coordination.

4. Consider the Setting: Keep the location and season in mind when choosing wardrobe elements. For instance, if you're shooting at a beach, light and breezy fabrics may be more appropriate, while a cityscape might call for a more urban chic style.

Creating Wardrobe Harmony for Different Photography Types

Family Portraits: For family portraits, consider a unifying color or theme that ties everyone together. However, allow each family member to choose clothing that reflects their individuality within that theme.

Headshots: Wardrobe coordination for professional headshots is crucial. Choose clothing that aligns with your industry and personal brand while ensuring it harmonizes with the background and lighting.

Engagement and Couples Shoots: Couples can coordinate their outfits by selecting complementary colors or matching elements, such as ties or accessories, while still maintaining their distinct styles.

Conclusion

Wardrobe harmony is about creating a visual narrative that tells your story while maintaining a cohesive and pleasing look. By coordinating your clothing choices instead of matching them, you allow each individual's personality to shine through, resulting in photographs that are both visually appealing and authentic.

Locations: From Meaningful to Magnificent https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2023/9/locations-from-meaningful-to-magnificent

Introduction

Choosing the perfect location for your photography session is more than just picking a pretty backdrop. It's about crafting a visual narrative that complements your unique story, personality, and vision. As a professional photographer, I understand the significance of location in creating memorable and impactful photographs. In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of photography locations, exploring how they can transform your images from meaningful to magnificent.

The Role of Location in Photography

Setting the Scene

The location you select serves as the canvas for your photographic masterpiece. It sets the tone, mood, and context of your images. Whether it's a tranquil park, a vibrant urban street, a cozy family home, or a dramatic natural landscape, each location brings its own character to the frame.

Enhancing the Story

Every photograph tells a story, and the right location can enhance and enrich that story. It can be a place of personal significance, where you first met your partner, or a spot that captures the essence of your family's favorite activities. Locations can also be chosen to reflect a particular theme or mood, adding depth to your images.

Finding the Perfect Location

Personal Significance

Consider locations that hold personal significance for you or your family. This could be the place where you got engaged, your children's favorite park, or your family's vacation spot. These locations add depth and emotional resonance to your photographs.

Scenic Beauty

Stunning landscapes and architectural wonders can elevate the aesthetic appeal of your photographs. Whether it's a beach at sunset, a cityscape at night, or a lush forest in the morning light, breathtaking locations create visually striking and memorable images.

Versatile Settings

Some locations offer a versatile backdrop for various types of photography. Urban areas, for instance, provide a mix of architectural and natural elements, making them suitable for everything from family portraits to professional headshots.

Making the Most of Your Chosen Location

1. Communicate Your Vision: Share your vision and ideas with me before the session. This helps me understand your preferences and tailor the photography to your unique style and goals.

2. Plan Ahead: Consider the time of day and weather conditions when scheduling your session. Some locations may be more suitable during specific seasons or times of day.

3. Be Comfortable: Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the chosen location. Being comfortable and confident in your attire will allow you to fully enjoy the session.

4. Embrace Spontaneity: While planning is essential, don't be afraid to embrace spontaneity during the shoot. Some of the most genuine and memorable moments happen when you let go and enjoy the experience.

Conclusion

Locations, from meaningful to magnificent, play a pivotal role in the art of photography. They provide the backdrop for your unique story, adding depth, mood, and significance to your images. Whether you're drawn to places of personal meaning or breathtaking scenic beauty, the right location can transform your photographs from meaningful captures to magnificent works of art.

The Art of Capturing Timeless Emotions https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2023/9/the-art-of-capturing-timeless-emotions Introduction

Emotions are the heart and soul of every photograph. They are the invisible threads that connect us to the images we cherish and the moments we hold dear. As a professional photographer, I've had the privilege of delving into the intricacies of human emotions through my lens, and I'm excited to share with you the art of capturing these timeless sentiments. In this blog post, we'll explore how the magic of photography can freeze emotions in time, allowing you to relive those precious moments again and again.

Emotions: The Essence of Photography

The Human Experience

Photography is more than just a visual medium; it's a means to encapsulate the human experience. Every smile, tear, laugh, and embrace tells a story, and as photographers, we have the unique opportunity to be storytellers. Our lens becomes a conduit for expressing the beauty and complexity of human emotions.

Emotions as Memories

Emotions serve as memory triggers. A photograph has the incredible power to transport you back to the exact moment when you felt that emotion. Whether it's the joy of a wedding day, the tenderness of a family gathering, or the determination in a professional headshot, these emotions are etched into the pixels of the photograph, waiting to be revisited.

The Photographer's Role in Capturing Emotions

Observation and Connection

As a photographer, my role is to observe and connect. I keenly observe the dynamics, expressions, and interactions during a session to capture genuine emotions. Establishing a connection with my subjects allows them to feel comfortable and express their true selves, resulting in authentic and heartfelt photographs.

Timing is Everything

Timing plays a crucial role in capturing emotions. It's about being patient and ready to click the shutter at the perfect moment when an emotion peaks. Whether it's the twinkle in a child's eye or the laughter shared between loved ones, these fleeting moments are the ones we treasure most.

Preserving Timeless Emotions in Your Photography

1. Communicate Your Vision: Share your thoughts and feelings with me before the session. Tell me what emotions you want to capture, whether it's the love between partners, the pride in a professional portrait, or the connection within a family. Your input helps shape the narrative of your photographs.

2. Relax and Be Yourself: During the session, relax and be yourself. Emotions flow naturally when you're comfortable, and my goal is to create an environment where you can genuinely express yourself.

3. Trust the Process: Trust in my expertise and experience. I'll guide you through the session, suggesting poses and moments that bring out the emotions we want to capture. Trust in the process, and let's create magic together.

4. Celebrate Your Story: The resulting photographs are not just images but a celebration of your unique story and the emotions that define it. Display these photographs proudly in your home, share them with loved ones, and relive the moments whenever you need a touch of nostalgia or a reminder of the beauty of life's emotions.

Conclusion

The art of capturing timeless emotions is at the heart of what I do as a professional photographer. It's about freezing moments that make your heart skip a beat, evoking a smile, or bringing a tear to your eye. Emotions are the universal language that transcends time, and through the power of photography, we can hold onto these moments forever.

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2022/5/marketing-marketing-marketing I don't know about you but sometimes good things happen that actually are not good.. What I mean is that when i first started my business, for a few years word of mouth really worked. I always had jobs come along through people I knew or who were directed to me by clients.

After a few years I came to realize that I never really did any marketing and now that I'm trying to start. I'm at a loss as to where to start. I'm not saying that I don't know about Google, Facebook or Instagram. I've done those platforms. i've had plenty of likes and follows but I want to get into a more consistent and measurable way to market. In doing my research I think Google is the best for me. Right now I'm still researching and trying to budget appropriately for my campaign. I don't have a lot of money to market so I'm weighing the best options to start. Do any of you have any ideas what works best? If so, hit me up and let me know. I will keep you posted as to what I find out and where I decided to focus. Until then.....

Updates completed https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2022/4/updates-completed I'm finished! Well, sort of.

I did complete the updates that I wanted. I'm happy with the updates and it does reflect the changes that were needed. But as with everything, now I will move onto other aspects that will bring me more clients - marketing!  I know that's a whole other subject and I don't think I ever concentrated on my marketing. Most of my work was through word of mouth and yes, you do want work through that avenue, it's an easier sale when someone refers you.  So as I move to this area, I will also share my findings, trials and errors.

The other project I was working on was the live streaming setup for my church. We wanted to go from one iPhone and an audio recorder to a full blown two camera setup with a live switcher with lower thirds graphics. This would allow our small church to look a little more professional in the Facebook and YouTube world.

The setup with I chose to go with comprises of the following:

ATEM Mini Pro switcher

Apple Mac Mini computer

two (2) LG 27in Monitors

Behringer Xenyx 8 channel Mixer

Worship Tools (formerly Presenter) software

OBS

ATEM Software Control

After hooking up everything I found one (major) issue. While researching how to connect three (3) monitors, I knew you could use USB ports and USB to HDMI converters to connect multiple monitors, and the Mac Mini had 2 lighting, 4 USB and 1 HDMI port so I thought I would be good. The issue I later realized was that the Mac mini - no matter how many ports you have - only allows you to connect two video sources straight out of the box. Now you may say, "what's the problem then, you have two monitors and you can connect two". Well initially I wanted to connect three monitors. Worship tools has an output monitor that uses the whole second monitor so that you can't use it with anything else, and the ATEM  needs  dedicated monitor, and the last monitor was for accessing anything I needed from website or other programs on my computer - hence my need for three monitors. I tried everything that I knew to try to figure out something but I just couldn't work it out. Also, being that I live in other state from where my church is, I had also scheduled training that evening. I could still do the training but the setup would look a little different and we wouldn't be able to use the setup I had designed. I still had another day to return to see it I could figure out a solution, but not another day for training. So we went ahead and did the training. The remainder of the night I kept researching and searching YouTube for answers to my issue. Then I remembered I had previously tried working with NDI Tools. NDI Tools has a NDI monitor feature that you can install and your system thinks the NDI monitor is a separate monitor installed on your computer. I was thinking that this may be the answer! I couldn't wait to get back to the church to try it out the next day.

After installing the NDI software and opening up the NDI Monitor  - the system did recognize the NDI monitor and we were good to go! Thank you Jesus! If you want to check out our live stream you can watch us on Facebook - FUMC Pacoima or on YouTube at First United Methodist Church of Pacoima

Next up, live streaming and marketing challenges

The work continues, but... https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2022/3/the-work-continues-but Hey everyone! I'm still working on the rebranding of my website but I had to take a pause to continue some previous work that I'm doing with my church. Part of my ministry is to help with our online presences with our live-streaming of our weekly services. Right now it's real basic with just an iPhone and sound recorder. Our vision was to do a more professional setup. We've purchased the new equipment and i'm currently testing out the new format with two cameras and an Atem mini pro.

That's kinda delayed my website re-work but I was able to figure out my pricing for what I want to offer. The last part of what I want to work on is the presentation of my site when people visit. I haven't quite figured that out yet but have some ideas. I want people to be able to get a visual of what it looks like to see the art I create for them on their wall. That concept might have to wait until I actually shoot some sessions so in the mean time I will do my best to represent that. The lab i'm working with is White House Custom Color (WHCC), so I will see if I can get some samples to hang and photography?. The work continues and I will check in next week with my progress For those interested my church is First United Methodist Church of Pacoima. You can find us on Facebook and YouTube for our recorded sermon's, We also produce a podcast which is an audio version of our sermons. You can find those on Heart radio, Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast.

The work continues... https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2022/2/the-work-continues In my last post

I talked about reworking my business to a more custom, and specific business model. Last week I spent most of my time struggling with one question. If I change the type of work I'm going to produce, what else would I need to change? My first thought was... I need to upgrade my camera! That of course set off all kinds of alarms! I currently shoot with a Nikon D3X which is a 24Megapixel camera. It's a great camera and I've used it for most of my work for the last seven (7) years. One of my reasons for not upgrading was that most of the new cameras have less megapixels than what I'm using. Yes, the mirrorless cameras have more megapixels and a higher dynamic range, but for the type of photography I was doing, it wasn't necessary. So like I said, most of my week was spent panicking about how much money I was going to need to upgrade my equipment. I contemplated going mirrorless but then I would run into replacing lenses which would increase my expense. Even if I upgraded within the Nikon family I would still be at a disadvantage with adaptors which would allow me to use my existing glass with the newer camera but I would lose the autofocus functionality. I contemplated selling my old equipment to help fund my upgrade. Even then it would still cost a lot of money to upgrade. So now what?

I was listening to a podcast by Allison Tyler Jones and she also does larger prints for her customers. So I decided to ask her what camera she uses. Her reply made me laugh because it was so simple. She shoots with a Nikon D850, which is a 45megapixel camera (the same as newer mirrorless cameras) that would allow me to produce the larger prints that I want and use my existing lenses. One good thing that came out of this research is that I did find a lot of good and useful information for the new mirrorless cameras. As my business grows I will definitely look to upgrade a some point. For right now i'm fine. I can move on to the rework and continue the process of refining my products and prices. Next, I will look at my pricing and profitability and see what else I can tweak. Question, do any of you shoot Mirrorless ? If so what are the major differences (good or bad) I'm curious to know.

Thanks D

The RE-work https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2022/2/the-re-work The RE-Work

In this post I am going to talk about switching gears, or what I call a re-work. During the past couple of years navigating through the pandemic, I’ve had time to re-evaluate what I’m going to do with my photography business. Examining what I like, don’t like, and the such. Basically, reworking my business. What does rework mean for me?  It means I will look at my business and figure out what I like and don’t like, what I want shoot and what I don’t want to shoot and I’m going to tailor my business accordingly. What I’ve done in the past is weddings. Don’t get me wrong I like weddings, but I don’t like shooting weddings anymore. It’s just what I’ve always done. So, if it’s not my focus, I’m going to remove it from the website. I want to focus on portraits. Family portraits and high-end portraiture as art. High school seniors, if I chose to shoot them, it will be as artwork.

Now, let’s focus on the rework process that I’m going to use. There is a certain client that I will be my focus. One that likes artwork, can afford it, and appreciates photography as an art form. Most people have the impression that anyone with a camera can be a great photographer. The cell phone industry even promotes that same view. They basically say, if we just give you a good enough camera, you can take great pictures. Well there’s a lot more to it. (believe me) I have put in a lot of work to get where I am today. I’ve done a lot of study about the art of photography, shot many different lighting scenarios, studied to improve my editing and a lot of trial and error. As such, I have learned a lot of things that I use to make my work unique. I don’t want to give that away to someone who doesn’t value what I do. I take pride in all facets of the photography experience. When meeting with clients I work to build a relationship with them that will translate to a warm and satisfying experience. From the start I discuss everything that will happen before, during and after the shoot. I discuss pricing and my business model. I understand that I may not be the right photographer for everyone. That’s okay, but It’s best to find out up front and end the relationship where we both understand each other, rather than end it bitterly later. It’s important to me that I take the time to explain everything that I do. I take the lead and follow up with you. I ask to make sure that are steps make sense to you and that I do all the prep work for you. My goal is to present you with printed, tangible art, that you will display in your home. I will get into more details next time.

Thanks, D

Wow! What a Ride! https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2022/2/wow-what-a-ride HELLO 2022!

This past two years has been difficult for everyone. I'm praying for a prosperous 2022! After relocating to the Reno/Sparks, NV. area, I am working to rebuild my business. I love the area, the open land, nature and the people. I've had to redefine my business due to the pandemic like everyone else. I don't do many weddings anymore but I have shifted my business mostly to portraits and headshots. I'm looking to build new relationships and meet new people on this journey. If any of you are from the area, can you let me know your past experience with photographers here? I'm looking forward to posting more now that I'm settled. I also have updated my website with more of my work . Check it out and let me know how you like it.

Back to Work! https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2020/3/back-to-work As with any profession, the more you practice the better you become. I took some time off at the end of the year just because the last of opportunities to shoot interesting subjects. We this year so far I've had numerous opportunities to shoot a lot of interesting people in unique spaces! I've met some super friendly and nice people along the way and this make shooting even better. I've done a couple of paid meetups and these seem like the best for me right now. They are more professional and people have more of a commitment in doing good work.

Original Upload Copies

I've also just update my pricing for this year. I think it's reasonable, and still I think it separates me from the newbies and puts me in a position where you know you are dealing with a serious artist and now just some fly by night person. i know my work is good and better than a lot of what I've seen out there. I'm comfortable talking about my abilities, my work and what I can do differently for my clients and why they should chose me for their photography needs. So back to work for me, and i'll catch up with you guys later!. By the way, what did you guys give up for Lent?

The Prep went well but..................... https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2020/2/the-prep-went-well-but So...... as I was sharing with you, a friend of mine asked me to be the videographer for their vow renewal. As I was prepping and thinking of shots, it came to me to ask them what shots they would like. After messaging them, they responded that they had gotten another videographer and all I had to do was to show up with my wife and enjoy. I'm glad i asked! Actually, they were thinking of me when they did this and I appreciate that from them. It was an awesome and unique ceremony and I'm very glad that I got to share the moment with them.

DCP_2907-72DCP_2907-72 Although I didn't get a chance to do their video, i learned a lot from the prep work that I did. I'm still learning and working on my camera movements, shot selection and overall storyline planning. It definitely helped me think in a different direction from photographing a wedding. The goal is the same but you are using a different medium.

Preparation - Step 1 https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2020/1/preparation---step-1 So i shared with you that i'm doing my first professional video for a couple of friends of mine. Part of doing a project is having an idea of what you want to capture, planning the shots, then executing the shots. As i'm prepping for my video, i'm been reviewing some of my past videos, friends, and videos of some people i follow on Instagram and from that i know what i want to capture. Also in the process you need to check with the clients to make sure you also capture what they want. I'm still in the planning stage and listing out my shots just as if i would be if i was a writer for a movie script. Once i'm done I will review and refine then plan for the shot. As always you need to be flexible to the event. This way you can be ready to take advantage of any opportunities that may present itself. Remember you can always capture extra footage, but once the event is over - it's over. I'll discuss more of my shot selection next week. Stay tuned!

Opportunities! https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2020/1/opportunities Opportunities!

Sometimes opportunities come to you and you don’t realize them. Case in point, I’ve been asked to shoot a wedding video for a friend, and you know they want me to do it for free which I agreed to. Only because I don't do wedding videos. I've alway wanted to but the opportunity hadn't presented itself - but now it has! One of the things I didn’t think about was, how can I use this video for marketing my website?

Original Upload Copies Original Upload Copies So what I plan to do is to go ahead and shoot the video and use it as a marketing opportunity, and hopefully get more clients excited to work with me. Since I’ve started my video services with on my website, they have always been in conjunction with video-only company I had partnered with. So now with a little more experience I can continue to offer video services and still maintain full control of the content by doing the work myself. So this coming February I have my first professional video shootand I’m going to do on  it’s going to be awesome. This is an opportunity I didn’t think about when they asked me to do the job. I just wanted to do something and give back to friends and now I’m going to use it to make work better and expand the work I can offer clients. Right now I’m using the time before the wedding to plan shots and angles and to understand the client's wants and needs and work on some test videos to prepare myself for anything that comes my way. Stay tuned, I will breakdown my video gear and approach in the coming week!so .

back to blogging https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2019/12/back-to-blogging I think part of the reason it was so hard to blog was that I couldn't think of anything that I thought was interesting to write about. And I’ve been doing something I should’ve been blogging about all the time and that would’ve been my videos that I do for my church, First United Methodist Church of Pacoima.

I also produce songs for our church choir. All of this is very new to me,very interesting and brings me lots of enjoyment. I think I will start sharing a lot more of what I do you just in general not just my photography . I’m much more than a photographer. I'm a creator, artist, and computer geek.

I will start sharing my thoughts, projects, philosophy and also continue to post my photography. I do a lot of work just to meet interesting people and to create different styles of photos to keep things lively.

Family Portraits https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2019/12/family-portraits I want to talk about the importance of and how we have forgotten about, Family Portraits and photo albums. In the years before the prevalence of smartphones and the ability to take and store photos on your phone, almost everyone had a family photo album. The albums were great because you could always pick them up and look back through the years to see a families history as it was captured in photos. I know I learned a lot about my family by looking at the photo albums we had and asking a bunch of questions. It also answered a few questions on its own. They were keepsakes that were cherished and proudly displayed. Today most people's pictures are on their phone, not backed up, and susceptible to loss if your phone to crashes. Even if that doesn't happen, they're still on your phone where only you can see them.

Family TimesLos Angeles, CA based wedding, portrait, and lifestyle photographer
That might be okay but just imagine being able to share them anytime with friends or family without giving up your phone, or by having an album, or pictures hanging on your wall. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that a professional photographer will do that for you. Special times, special moments can all be captured and presented for everyone to enjoy. Question, how many times have you promised yourself that you are going to print that picture and haven’t? Lastly, when was the last time you gathered for family pictures? My guess would be it was a long time ago.

Location Shooting https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2018/2/location-shooting Location Shooting

Location shooting is a very good way to show places that are special to you in your pictures. I encourage people (especially families) to think of location for their portraits. Meaningful locations bring comfort or evoke emotion and good feeling and are great places to create lasting memories. There are a few things to consider when deciding on where you wan to shoot.

How busy is the location on the day and time you want to shoot? If it's a public place usually early in the morning or later in the day works best. Busy places can be difficult to work in unless you want that type of look. Waiting at a location can be very annoying, distracting and by the time you are ready to shoot, everyone is cranky, tired or distracted and posing for a photo is that last thing they want to do and you don't want that to show your the portraits DCP_2857-22DCP_2857-22

Is a photography (or filming) permit required for the location? I had a client that came to me about a week from their wedding day, and wanted to change the location of the bridal party pictures. That wasn't too bad and it was close to the venue but after getting home I thought, hmm... do I need a permit for the location? After checking a few of the city's websites, i found that a permit was required. I notified the client and was able to get the permit in time, but it was cutting it real close! Everything worked out and now I'm super sensitive about asking about permits for every location that I shoot in.

And lastly..... weather! Depending on where you live, it may be a impossible to shoot outside in January or February. So timing of the portraits, spring, summer and fall are the most popular. Luckily for me living in California, we rarely have weather related issues.

You have to also be prepared with changes of clothes, makeup, and other items you may need that day. Because you're away from the studio we try to keep extras of everything available just in case. We want your day to be successful and being prepared makes for less stress...i.e. more enjoyable day of shooting.

Happy Shooting everyone!

Darrell

New Paths..... https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/11/new-paths

I recently posted an article about our new offering of video services. Our goal is to be a one stop shop if necessary. We have a company that has a very strong presence and loads of experience producing may different types of videos (Sunwest Video). But the other day, I had a chance to dive in myself and do my first professional video for a client. It wasn't anything very elaborate, just a taping of a sporting event and producing a video highlight reel. I had a ball! it was like my first paying photography job! I spent time prepping my gear and stressing over whether i was forgetting something..... you know, the usually pre job stress! I can say though, since i have been producing videos for my church for years, actually getting behind the camera and filming the event was easier (not real easy) than i thought. It also gave me an appreciation of the professionals that do this as their only service. Like photography, there is a LOT of planning and prepping, and I'm so glad we can now offer professional video services to our photography customers. I think the transition is very natural. Have any of you started in photography and have kinda dabbled in video? if so, what was your motivation to pursue video? I'd like to know?

New Pics of............ Me! https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/10/new-pics-of-me We as photographers, rarely have our picture taken.

We spend hours and hours behind the camera and the computer editing, but i realized that I hadn't had a picture of me taken for some time. The pictures below are just from a little break during a couple of days while shooting. I have to remind myself that as a photographe,r we forget that people sometimes want to see us in the pictures! So for the remainder of this year and next year I will make a conscience attempt to force myself to get from behind the camera more often. Whether it's during a shoot and just for fun.

Photography Options - Diversification https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/5/diversification

Diversification

Photography has many, many, options and disciplines to specializing in. For most photographers, it’s best to specialize in one discipline i.e. Weddings. But as you progress in anything as well as photography, you may have other areas of interest that you want to try.

JamiSal Wedding 111116 Maybe you want to shoot High School Seniors, Event photography, or Street photography may be something you want to try for a project. There is nothing wrong with diversifying but you need to consider your brand and what you are doing in respect to your brand. It can be very confusing if someone goes to your site and they can’t really tell what your specialty is! I don’t think anyone would just look for a General photographer. Most people looking for a photographer have a specific type of photography that they are looking for a photographer to satisfy. My suggestion would be to start a different website for any professional diversification that you want to do. This way you don’t confuse your brand and customers searching for a specialty, will look for you, based on searches for that specialty. I know that I have many areas that I’ve already dabbled in, and there are more to come. I’m already looking to do High School Senior photography and Lifestyle photography. As I do more and more of each type, my natural progression will be to separate each business into its own brand. Have any of you had any experience with multiple businesses under different brands? I eager to know your experience.

Slowing Down https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/5/slowing-down

Slowing down? Yes, this is one of the things i had to learn early in running my photography business. We work hard marketing and promoting our business and working to get clients. Once we get a new client we work through the contract and scheduling, make suggestions about outfits and shoot locations etc.. If you think about it, there is a lot of prep work before the actual client sessions. Depending on how many clients you are working with at a given time, it can sometimes be overwhelming. This often tends to lead to rushing through the client sessions, often without realizing it. This is where you have to slow down! This is when your time with you clients is the most important and where you want to spend quality time producing your best work. In the beginning i was so excited with all i wanted to do i would rush through the sessions and would end up with time left over at the end without any idea of what to do. My work wasn't my best and I knew why but I had to really work to continue with what i have planned for the session. I had to learn to slow down and let the shoot evolve, while also maintaining the overall theme of what i had planned. The client would relax and the sessions became a lot more fun and a lot more productive with amazing results. Slowing down has carried over into all aspects of my business and work has become a lot more fun and hopefully my clients have noticed the difference.

Have any of you ever had a similar time in your careers where this was the case? If so, please share how you learned to slow down.

Darrell

Video and Photography https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/4/video-and-photography JamiSal Wedding 111116 Using video and photography is nothing new but it does take a little more planning that using just one disciple. As a photography, moving into video is, I think a natural transition. A lot of the same things (composition, planning and preparation, forming ideas) are natural in both disciplines. What I have seen as my biggest struggle has been thinking about the video aspect as I’m planning my photoshoots. It takes a little more planning and thought. I try to use existing shoots as a way of saying “it would be great to do this or that” and then incorporate it into my next photoshoot. My next idea is to use some video footage on my webpage. I think it’s a cool idea and can’t wait to put something together and put it out there. I will keep you informed of the progress. Has anyone ever tried that before? If so, how did it turn out? Or how effective was it drawing more people to your page and more bookings? It would be great to hear your ideas?

Keep moving forward https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/4/keep-moving-forward Ah, the woes of a photographer or any small business in general. As we strive to provide the best service we can, there are inevitable bumps in the road. We can learn from them and we can get better from them. Case in point. I try to make sure all of the wording in my contracts are clear and concise so that when I’m discussing the terms with clients, they are clear to the client. We spend hours and hours going over wording and how it will be interpreted only to find out – we all think differently! What I learned from my last experience was that you can always do better in trying to understand people and how they view things. We have to remember that in trying to deliver superior service we need to be receptive to the input we are given and how it was derived. If you see blue and I see royal blue, neither of us are wrong we just see things differently. So when that happens you don’t want to argue if there is no reason to. The best thing to do is to find out how you can do better in describing your intentions. Maybe using the term “blue family” might work best for the example above and can still get your point across. As we know you can’t please everyone all the time, but we can strive to be clear and concise and open to feedback in our ongoing effort provide the best customer experience possible. The lesson I learned was that hey maybe I could have been more clear, but lets agree on the differences and work toward a solution. From this I will be adjusting some terms in my contracts to strive toward that clear and concise terminology that I want to get across to my clients. In the end we should always be learning and growing, both in business and in knowledge.

Me Blogging? https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/3/me-blogging Wow this is big, me blogging? Well we'll see how it goes.

For my second wedding I was chosen by a young couple i knew from my son's high school - Steven & Jackie. Actually everything went pretty well at the end of the day. There were a few hiccups, but we photographers learn as we go. We started with the bride's pre-wedding shoot and I got some good pics of her getting her hair and makeup done. After that though we realized the problem. Makeup was running behind - about an hour and a half. So I finished shooting her dress and jewelry and then we had to change the plan. The original plan was to do the pre-ceremony pictures with the bride and bridesmaids and then the groom and groomsmen, but due to the lateness of the time, that wasn't going to happen!

This is the life of a wedding photographer!

We changed the plan and got it done. The one thing you learn quickly is that you have to be flexible and create and you can't let things rattle you. You have to focus on the plan and be a calming and authoritative source for people to turn to. If you lose it then things can easily spiral out of control.

So now I pose a question to everyone, how do you communicate the need for timing thing correctly? In one sense it seems like a small issue, but in the grand scheme of the wedding day it makes a world of difference. I always provide a timeline for the day. Does anyone do anything different?

Referrals and Friends https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/2/referrals-and-friends We all know that referrals are the best when trying to get business leads. My last Wedding client was just that, but the way it happened was a little different. She happened to be a friend of my assistant who witnessed by assistant's 30th birthday - birthday photoshoot i did for her.

As I was shooting I was showing them shots from the back of the camera. I found out month's later that my assistant's friend was getting married and was looking for a photographer - which ended up being me - to shoot her wedding. She it was because she like my "eye" and my shooting style. This just goes to show you that you never know how and where your new client will come from! Question.... has any on had any similar experiences finding clients? I'm interested to know

Wedding Prep https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2017/2/wedding-prep DC2_3362-20DC2_3362-20The big day! This was a lot of fun! Is what I thought afterward. The pre wedding pictures of he bridal party wasn't as stressful as I thought it would be. I think I was the most nervous in the beginning but it's how they say, once you get going your creativity kind of takes over. As always I tried to make sure I remembered everything (I did!) and all the ladies were great! Once everyone was ready we take a few shots, like this one in the room and then we proceeded to roam all over the hotel. The hotel was very accommodating and we basically had free reign mainly due to low occupancy for the end of the year. The wedding too place on December 31, the bride and groom wanted to start off the new year together as husband and wife. Unique and a very good idea! Here are some of the pictures from that day. Later I will share some of the groomsmen. Comments are welcome. Also because of the date of the wedding - it was very cold outside (and the wedding was outdoors right after sunset) My struggle after the wedding were the pictures of the bridal party - it was like 26 degrees and we were trying to take pictures and keep everyone warm. We eventually had to go inside and take pictures, but I know the pics would have been better outside but I couldn't stop shaking - along with everyone else. Any thoughts on how I could have handled this?

Thanks

An Awesome Couple https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2015/11/an-awesome-couple DCP_2867-32DCP_2867-32 This beautiful young couple happened to be friends of mine. We met through work and I was excited and honored to capture their engagement session. We picked a couple a places in the Antelope Valley (all their idea) and as you can see they had a good ideas of the types of photos they wanted. We spent a couple of hours between the two locations and they were very satisfied with the results. We used available light for all the photos. I used my Nikon 24-70, for most of the shots but I also had my 70-200 at hand for a few close-ups. I also, shot their wedding and I will post some of those photos later. As photographers we are always learning. The main thing I learned from this shoot was to bring an assistant next time! I had one available but at the last second I didn't think I would need her - Wrong! I was able to manage but it would have been a lot easier with a helping hand.

Education https://www.darrellclarkphotography.com/blog/2014/4/education

What a refreshing and educational time I had in Pasadena this week. I was there for the annual PPC (Professional Photographer's of California) conference and Expo. We had a lot of great speakers including Sandy Puc', Jerry Ghiones, Stacie Frazier, and Jessica Edwards. There were a few more speakers that I, unfortunately did not get to see but we only had a limited amount of time and too many choices! The most fun was the first day where we got to do some shooting. Jennie Carroll is an amazing model and she was very easy to shoot. I almost forgot, but Rick Ferro and Judy Host were equally awesome instructors. They gave us some valuable lighting tips that I will be using for years to come. DC
